songwriting and self-trust - creative support for your practice

What do I get from a songwriting class?

Explore your songwriting identity and open up a sense of self-trust, in a safe, nourishing environment for your songs.

Together, we will cherish your ideas and give them lots of space to live. Perhaps we’ll finish a song together, or perhaps we’ll share our favourite processes and techniques.

We’ll work on things like making time for your creativity, overcoming blocks, expressing yourself authentically, and having actual fun. We’ll spend plenty of time dreaming, mapping our your ideal journey, setting goals, and building a sustainable songwriting and creative practice within the rhythm of your life.

Why is it called a “class”?

I’m not sure! Sometimes I call it a workshop-for-one, sometimes I call it tutoring, or mentoring, or coaching. None of these words quite fit. I suppose the best way to describe it is that we share space in service of your songs!

What do I need to bring to the table?

I know this: you’re already at the table. You are the table! The table comes to you. Whether you consider yourself a beginner or someone at an advanced stage of your practice, we will find the right tone and pace together. You don’t have to bring an instrument, unless you’d like to!

OK, but I do need Zoom?

Good point, these classes take place on Zoom at a time mutually agreed between us. But if Zoom is no good, we can use another platform of your choosing.

I’m interested.

Great news! Do send me an email to discuss what a songwriting class might look (sound! ) like for you.

The best thing I have ever done with my life, creatively.” James, Helsinki (on songwriting classes)

“I can’t thank you enough for the past weeks, it came at the exact right time for me and has given me such a boost that I really needed. I feel so much more confident now to run with ideas instead of second-guessing and judging them before they ever have the chance to grow. I’ve felt a new kind of freedom thanks to this course that I’m going to try very hard to stay connected with!” - Georgia, Walthamstow (on group workshop course)

My songwriting approach:

I’ve been a singer-songwriter for almost twenty years, writing my first Emmy the Great songs while studying commercial music at University of Westminster.

In my career, I’ve written songs for my own albums and soundtracks, as well as helping other artists from all over the pop spectrum realise their own songs. I’ve also worked with young people and incarcerated women to develop their innate songwriting skills.

I’ve learned that songwriting is a tool for everyone, and everybody has the ability to write songs. It’s a creative practice and art form that can help us communicate, tell stories, even process our own emotional worlds. It’s a friend, and, like exercise, it’s a practice that can be built into our everyday lives.

Lots of people feel blocks in their songwriting journey - I definitely have! Having experienced so much self-criticism, I love helping people get to know their own blocks, and in doing so overcome them. I love hearing songs in the intimate early stages of composition, and watching them grow! I passionately believe in creative agency, and our own power to tap into the magic flow of our ideas and shape in a way that makes us happier, stronger people.
